All My Records: Selena Gomez and Zoë Saldaña “Emilia Perez: Mi Camino and El Mal”
It probably comes as no surprise that this record is not my musical cup of tea. Side A has Selena Gomez singing “Mi Camino” while the B-side is Zoë Saldaña with “El Mal.” Both songs are from Jacques Audiard’s 2024 crime thriller Emilia Pérez, which garnered some buzz leading up to its wide release but ultimately let this critic down. It should be noted, though, that Saldaña did win an Oscar for her performance – something I can’t complain too much about (she was pretty good, I’ll give the movie that much).
The most interesting thing about this record though, is that it was sent to me by Netflix as promotional material heading into the 2024 awards season. As a film critic, it’s not uncommon that I get weird shit from movie studios (scented candles, bottles of wine, t-shirts, hats, and all manner of tchotchkes) trying to woo me into giving their projects favorable reviews. This E.P. is one of those items. I never got around to reviewing the movie, and it seems very unlikely I’ll ever listen to this record again. If there are any Selena Gomez fans out there reading this, you can have it.
